Andr\u00e9s Aberasturi<\/h4>\n

Watching it is easy<\/h1>\n

As I look at J. Carrero’s work and make it my own – looking at it is easy because contemplating it is a pleasure, making it my own personally has not cost me anything – I realise more and more that hyperrealism in his paintings is just a word, a useless and academic adjective that defines that physical space, measurable in centimetres, between what seems to me above anything else fundamental in this exhibition and in the whole artistic career of its author: the encounter between two emotions.<\/p>\n

I mean that the painting, as an object, concerns me even less than what I suppose precedes it and what precedes it. The collection of nostalgia that hangs on these walls is but a sample of the preciosity only possible as the fruit of a profound knowledge of painting, of a technique refined to perfection and of the unlimited patience of the great creators. That would be more than enough in a world where perfection and a job well done are values in decline and, therefore, the heritage of a few madmen like J.Carrero.<\/p>\n

But there is, as I have already said, something that I cannot only contemplate as a beautiful object – and that disturbs me – in the work of this painter: those two emotions that surround each of his works.<\/p>\n

I don’t know if I would like to see J.Carrero in the studio in the middle of his work; I don’t think I would, because it would be almost an act of indecency; but I would give a piece of my time to contemplate his soul, his heart, his mind, his inner geography, for a few seconds, maybe a few minutes, maybe an hour just before staining the board for the first time. To contemplate his obsessions ordering the transparencies, deciding on the reflections, the shadows, the real and the unreal that will later take shape and colour in the finished painting; I would like to see him in that fever to discover the old paradises that inhabit him, in that storm of images and emotions, of real memories or those found on the other side of the mirror, of fantastic and chaotic experiences that come and go, I am sure, through the five sides of his feelings just before undertaking a new painting.<\/p>\n

I would like to contemplate his inner labyrinths, to discover his obsessions, that obsessive search for a childhood lost who knows where, I suppose in his native Granadilla in the lands of C\u00e1ceres.<\/p>\n

Then comes the elaboration of the painting, of the object, when the brushes are a continuation of the act of the fingers and the fingers are born of the soul. And on the boards these images are captured, the most intimate corners of emotions are painted forever, the warmth of the barely glimpsed nudes, the endearing presence of those tears uselessly saved at the last minute by a strip of ‘cello’ paper, the pens used to write life and those ring notebooks with torn pages that are then scattered among the unique work of J. Carrero.<\/p>\n

Because this whole exhibition is like a formidable mural, a divided frieze that could be arranged like a puzzle following only the horizontality of these tile borders, battered by time. Playing the game of putting all the paintings together in this way, the environment of an everyday life would appear, now withered but never abandoned, wounded by time in the mind of Carrero who – artists are, like the rest of mortals, contradictory beings – has, despite his obsessions with a time of memories, more future than past.<\/p>\n

The other emotion I was referring to is the one that closes this parenthesis in Carrero’s painting, that of the spectator who takes possession of a story that does not belong to him but which – and this is the genius detail – he identifies as his own. Carrero paints the story of the private life of each one of us, our intrahistory, and makes us relive our own emotions by placing ourselves on the other side of the mirror, confronting us with our battered past, our own lost paradises, our own slice of beauty in the form of memories that one would like to take home to show one’s child what clothes pegs were like before plastic, what plugs were like before halogen lighting and what cheesy little shoes we wore when trainers had yet to be invented.<\/p>\n

Because the work of Enrique Jim\u00e9nez Carrero is the painted album of our memory, a manual of our sentimental education, and underneath his paintings it should be clear that any resemblance with the reality of each one of us is not pure conscience, but the fruit of the brilliant sincerity of a great painter.<\/p>\n
